Jan 4, 2013 by

Happy Friday ! I love Friday’s not only because it’s the beginning of the weekend but it’s also the day you can celebrate all of your accomplishments over at Meg’s blog. Every Friday she does High five Friday and I think it’s just amazing. You should always celebrate your accomplishments either big or small. If you haven’t gone to check it out yet, make sure you head over to Meg’s blog and see what High Five Friday is all about.

So I’ve been reading a lot about fitness and health this past month and thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite go to online fitness resources. These websites are especially great if you’re just starting out. There’s loads of information on all of these websites. Just to let you guys know, I didn’t list them in any particular order.

image

1 - Zuzana Light & Body rock.tv

Their workouts are short, but so intense and efficient! It’s perfect for people that want to be and shape but are short on time. You also don’t need a gym membership for their workouts. It’s all home base workouts, that you can do in the comforts of your own home ! That sounds perfect to me !

2 - Tone it up

I cannot say anything other than – AMAZING! These girls have accomplished so much. They have the best community of people ever. As soon as you join their program, you already feel the love and you automatically feel motivated. My favorite part if their nutrition plan! It’s filled with great recipes that are easy to make! They also have a great collection of workouts as well. You should definitely check them out. It’s the best investment for yourself you’ll ever make.

3 - Bodybuilding

This website as numerous amounts of fitness information, fitness plans depending on your goals, etc. They even show you how to do every exercise they talk about and show you a list of exercises you can do to work every muscle group. There’s also a section full of delicious and healthy recipes.

4 - Livestrong

I don’t go on this website a whole lot but I have read a lot of their articles and they are great at giving out information and educating people on health and fitness. They also have some great workouts on their YouTube channel as well as great tips.

5 - Fitness Magazine

Again, I don’t se this website all that much, but I do love their weight loss and fitness plans. If you’re a planner and want a plan that’s already designed for you, it’s definitely a website for you. It’s also full of information as well.

6 - Women’s Health Magazine

I love this magazine ! I buy it on occasion, but I do love to read there articles about health and fitness ! You can find pretty much anything health related on this website.

We also can’t forget the numerous blogs out there that give out exceptional information about health and fitness! I unfortunately couldn’t list them all, but I do hope these resources can help you in any way! :)

Where do you find your fitness information?

Do you follow any type of fitness plan?

Chest Power Sets

Jan 2, 2013 by

Finally, we’re going to talk fitness on this blog ! It’s been forever. So I mentioned that I had a couple days off this week, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to share my workouts with you guys !

On that note, I’m so confused about what day we are it’s ridiculous. I’ve been on vacation mode -going to bed late, sleeping in, watching The Real Housewives of New York. It’s just what the doctor ordered though. I felt like I needed to recharge my battery a little bit before starting the new year. I didn’t even make nee year resolutions this year. I seriously just want to take it day by day and work on myself. There’s a lot of work to be done lol

So today, while watching RHNY, I did a quick and easy Chest Workout.

It was also a beautiful day today ! It was so warm for winter, so I took Callie out for a walk. I can’t handle walks with this little monster ! She either pulls so hard on the leash that I can’t walk her, or I let her run free for a bit and she goes crazy and runs away. What to do, what to do…

I’m going to enjoy the rest of the day since today is my last day of “lounging”. Tomorrow it’s errands, planning, organizing and might even go see my sis in law and nephew ! I might test out my photography stills on him!

Did you make new years resolutions ?

What does your vacation mode look like ?

Killer Abs Workout

Aug 24, 2012 by

Good morning ! Smile

I feel sooo much more motivated since I’ve been eating healthier ! I’m writing blog posts, cleaning, organizing, going to the gym ! I hope I’m not speaking to soon but I feel pretty confident I’m slowly getting out of my “rut”. I have goals again, and I’m excited. I missed that feeling ! I’m still having trouble waking up in the morning but it’s not as bad as it was. I just wish Callie would sleep in a little lol There’s actually a morning this week that I woke up at 5h00 am and went straight to the gym ! It felt pretty amazing let me tell you !

I’ve also been experimenting with foods, cooking lots, and making recipes from the Tone It Up plan. I don’t know why I forgot how healthy cooking wasn’t suppose to take 3 hours every night. You can have really healthy meals in a matter of minutes!

Yesterdays Eats consisted of -

Salsa, Beans & Quinoa – Amazing Combination. Plus this probably took me only 15 minutes !

DSC05419

I just bought these this weekends and absolutely love them ! I know beans are beans, but they were different. Really good, plus easy. I don’t always feel like cooking a batch of beans from scratch, It seems to take forever.

DSC05418

Lots of veggies were incorporated in my meals! (& Snacks)

DSC05429

This is the most delicious snack I’ve had in a while ! I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of this before. Guac with lime juice & a bit of Himalayan salt.

IMG_1033

I had originally planned on making a spinach salad for supper, but I really didn’t feel like eating a salad – So I improvised. Shrimps & Steamed broccoli always seems to do the trick.

IMG_1035

I also had planned to go to the gym, but N8 needed the car so I stayed home. I still have three days and three workouts so that’s perfect. I’ll finish up the week right.

So I’ve been doing this workout here in there! It’s not a long workout, but I guarantee you’ll be able to feel the burn. If not – do it until you feel the burn ! lol

I am doing this workout while watching this –

My sister got me hooked ! I’m already into season 2 and cannot stop lol Oh my and mysteries !

Are you addicted to a TV show right now ?

Any great ideas for snacks ?

Do you spend a lot of time cooking healthy meals?

Guest Post : Told in Vain

Aug 10, 2012 by

Hello Mostly Fit Readers!

I can’t begin how flattered I am to be able to chat with you today! I know Lils is off gallivanting with her parents…and as jealous as I am given my own homesickness, I must say I’m excited to get to do this!

But I’ve gotten ahead of myself, first things first! I’m Madison and I blog over at told.in.vain! It’s my own little creative space that follows a similar format to here, a lot of fitness and a smidgen of all those other “life” things strewn about.

I thought today it might be fun for us to chat about the ever-dreaded workout “rut”.

Terrible aren’t they?

I’m just coming out of my own so I figured I’d pass along some of the workouts that have helped me on my way!

First, gather some supplies…

pic 1

pic 2

You’ll never need more than these little things.

Personally, I love circuits. They keep my heart rate up and accomplish a lot of my cardio and weight goals simultaneously…saving me time and sanity!

Here are some of my favorites:

Leg Circuit

Lower Body Circuit

But maybe you just want straight cardio. You’re not into the fuss of gathering weights and your arms are giving you a death stare at the idea…

No problem, let’s do cardio!

Incline Intervals Workouts

Sprint Intervals

These aren’t your typical (boring) cardio sessions! I’m incapable of plodding along for 5 steady miles…but these really help mix things up and keep my body guessing!

I hope you enjoy some of the workouts! If you try any out, feel free to come stop by my blog and tell me all about it!

Thanks again to Lils for sharing her special space with me!

Guest Post : Running Tall

Aug 9, 2012 by

Oh hey there Mostly Fitness-ers! Let me introduce myself. I’m Erin and I blog over at Running Tall. I’m SUPER pumped to be guest posting for my fellow Saskie, Lils!

clip_image002

Repping the Saskatchewan Roughriders. FYI for everyone out there, I’ve just now officially dubbed “Saskie” as a new term, meaning “awesome people who live in Saskatchewan”. Spread it around.

If there’s one thing us Saskies are more than familiar with its shotgunning beer at a Rider game brutal winters.

clip_image004

source

Snow that stays for months on end, wind chill warnings, and temperatures dipping into the sub 40s Celsius. So what did I do? I signed up a half marathon in February 2012. Specifically, the Disney Princess Half Marathon in Florida!
clip_image006

source

This meant I would be training during Saskatchewan’s peak winter months – December, January and February. Obviously, I was a bit off my rocker when I signed up.

clip_image008

In the end I made it work and had an amazing race and the time of my life.

clip_image010

So now that I have one half marathon under my belt, I’m pretty much the world expert on running. I’m so surprised the Canadian track team wasn’t banging down my door begging me to be on their team. There’s always 2016! Rio De Janeiro, watch yo back.

But for real, training for a half in Canadian winter wasn’t too difficult. Here are a few tips for those of you facing this dilemma.

1. Meet your new BFF.

I did 99% of my training on the treadmill since I scored a wicked cheap Gold’s Gym membership. Another option would be to get a pass at your local track facility and make use of the track. Running outside could be an option in locations where the winters are milder, but I have zero experience with that. I know that there are grips you can put on the bottom of your running shoes that help you grip the ice and other tools. But honestly? I will take running on a treadmill in a heated gym over running outside during Saskatchewan winters ANY DAY.

To be honest, I was ready to sledgehammer the treadmill after my first few training runs.

clip_image012

source

What the treadmill felt like to me at first.

After the first mile, I was INSANELY bored and would get distracted very easily by all the activity around me. To combat this, I schedule my runs during my favorite TV shows. Knocking out 4.5 miles was easy peasy thanks to Four Weddings, New Girl, and Cougar Town. My long runs fell on Sundays and I could usually count on a Criminal Minds or Storage Wars marathon, or at least a decent movie to keep me occupied.

clip_image014

source

Oh Derek Morgan. How you saved my life on dreadful long runs.

2. Mimic a road: Since it’s always best to train on the terrain you’re running on and I obviously wasn’t, I always put the incline up to 1 to resemble the resistance of the road.

clip_image016

Keeping up my half marathon training in Panama! No excuses. The treadmill is your friend.

This trick worked! I didn’t feel anymore fatigued during the half than I did on my long runs. Success!

3. Get localized. Get to your race location a few days ahead of time to get familiar with the change in temperature, humidity, altitude, etc. Try to get in at least 1 taper run done in the environment you’ll be racing in. In my case, I made a vacation out of it, or a “racecation” and enjoyed the Florida sun for a week.

clip_image017

Just one of the many glorious pictures taken at DisneyWorld

In between roller coasters and sun tanning, I squeezed in 2 taper runs in the heat and humidity. I was glad I did since I was mentally prepared for the possible high temperatures on race day (although it was a cool and overcast morning the day of the half – perfect running weather!).

4. Find a training plan you love. This is a tip for training for a race in general, but it doesn’t hurt to have a fantastic training plan that you look forward to doing! It’s difficult enough to get bundled up and drive to the gym in the middle winter, make sure you’re excited to complete your training!

I started with Self magazine’s training plan, but decided to switch it up halfway through my training. I wasn’t excited to do my runs and I just wasn’t jiving with the plan. So I turned to Hal Higdon! His plans worked really well with my full time work schedule and my running style in general. I loved his plan so much – I did the Novice 1 plan – that I’m using his intermediate plan for my upcoming September half!

clip_image018

So those are my amazing tips for training for a race in the heart of winter. I promise, you won’t go insane on the treadmill. But you know what? Even if you do go cray cray, crossing that finish line and that glorious racecation in a place that’s NOT a winter wasteland will be worth it!

clip_image020

Just call me ridiculously photogenic girl.

Feel free to come see me at Running Tall if you want to talk running, food, or whatever you want! We can talk about how horrible winters are and bond over less than attractive race photos among other super cool things.
